INCISION

INCISION studies adaptive reuse in Nantou City—an “urban village” embedded within Shenzhen’s rapidly modernized metropolis. The project treats cutting as a spatial tool: “urban incisions” carve into an existing apartment block to create interior public realms while exposing hidden structural and material layers like an archaeological section, staging a dialogue between past and present.
A floating roof frames panoramic views of street life below and establishes a new public ground above, with rooftop metal volumes echoing vernacular add-ons and housing public/service functions. Circulation is rewoven into the alley network by extending a side street into the heart of the building. Vertically, an existing stairwell is cut open into a new courtyard, where a suspended metal stair leads visitors up through guestroom levels to rooftop gardens.
